This article is a list of my favorite, free, downloadable, online games. Downloaded games are games that must be downloaded and installed on your computer. Some are multi-player and others are single player. All have chat features that allow you to communicate with fellow players online. This is not in any way a complete list of all free downloadable online games and gaming sites. Neither is it a review of any of the games listed. It is simply a list of my favorite free downloadable online games and gaming sites.
Solve Puzzles for Science | Fold It
Fold It is a protein folding game in which you, the player, can help science by folding proteins. This game is available for download for Windows XP/Vista, Intel OS X 10.4 or later and Linux. Though initially I found the game a bit confusing, if you play long enough you can get the hang of how to fold the proteins to get the highest score. There are chat windows so you can talk to other players, get help or compare notes or just shoot the breeze. You can save your progress at any time, share your protein with others so they can improve on it and even compete against one another in duels. This game captivated my attention for hours at a time.
Eternal Lands is a free-to-play role-playing game where you play with others online. This game is available for Windows, Machintosh and Linux. Eternal Lands offers questing, combat, pvp areas and battle arenas, skills (which includes alchemy, crafting, harvesting, magic, tailoring, to name only a few) and guilds. Eternal Lands has an auto-save feature in addition to the manual saving command so you don't have to worry about losing your progress when you have to stop whatever you're doing. Also, the wonderful feeling of community within Eternal Lands via guilds and chat channels makes it one of my favorite games.
Dungeons and Dragons Online
Yes! They have made Dungeons and Dragons Online Unlimited Free Play! Dungeons and Dragons Online is available for Windows. You'll need to install the Turbine Downloader (available on the DDO website) which downloads the program and updates it automatically for you. Having just played it before beginning this article, and my character having died in mid-quest, I can say that it is a very challenging and fun game. You are allowed two character slots (more if you purchase them from the DDO store). The game play is either group or solo. Quests are given to you by NPCs so you'll need to talk to everyone you can. Each quest gives you information about required level, XP obtained, group size recommended and an approximation of its duration. The quests do not save if you're in the middle of them, so be aware of each quest's duration before you begin it. The music and sounds are wonderful. The graphics are amazing. DDO offers a one-of-a-kind gaming experience.
These are my favorite, free, downloadable, online games and gaming sites. I hope you'll try them out and enjoy the as much as I do.
